Well, my sister notified me that she received the card from the (rip-off) post office today. She went down to get it and they said that it would cost another $30 CA since "gift" wasn't written on the box.
So a word of warning. Write gift on the parcel. Man, I hate Canada Post!! |

There should be a box to tick on the customs form for that. You tick either "gift" or "merchandise." |

Yeah. I sent a drum to my parents for Christmas, and because it was an instrument, and I didn't write "gift" on the box, they had to pay $15 duty. They got some money refunded by phoning some number, but not all of it because of some stupid reason - something like that I wrote "The Doe's" instead of "John and Jane Doe", which only allowed a refund for one person. Anyway, really cool that my folks had to pay to get their Christmas gift. Canada ride my Post. |

What about sending personal effects back to Canada? Would qualifying the goods as "used" reduce/cancel customs charges? |

Same here. They had to pay about 49$ in duty for a couple of scarves and a sweater. Don't know if they got a refund of not. |
