Anyone have a good suggestion for a writing book for university-level students? They don't write at a high level. Many of them need work with basic mechanics as well. |

I thought 'Writing Matters' was pretty good- off the top of my head can't remember the authors nor publishers. It's a thick book dealing with different genres and how students can go about developing their own paragraphs for each particular genre. It's got heaps of useful practice actvities as well. |

How about trying English journals. That way the students who are too shy to say much in class can communicate with you by writing. |

Form a committee, discuss it for one semester, make recommendations, wait a semester, and then use the book someone else in the department choses. That's what usually happens. Pessimistic? Nah...realistic. |
