Anyone have a good suggestion for a writing book for university-level students? They don't write at a high level. Many of them need work with basic mechanics as well.

I thought 'Writing Matters' was pretty good- off the top of my head can't remember the authors nor publishers. It's a thick book dealing with different genres and how students can go about developing their own paragraphs for each particular genre. It's got heaps of useful practice actvities as well.

How about trying English journals. That way the students who are too shy to say much in class can communicate with you by writing.

Form a committee, discuss it for one semester, make recommendations, wait a semester, and then use the book someone else in the department choses. That's what usually happens. Pessimistic? Nah...realistic.
