Would these make you cringe? The first is a project for our classes from an arts and crafts company.
The other is a recent homework assignment from a student. I asked her what she meant to write, and she quickly erased it. I'm hoping she meant to write something different than what I'm seeing.

If a student wrote that in a public school in America there would be serious consequences for that student - in the vast majority of public schools anyway.
OCOKA Dude, your attitude needs some serious improvement! |

What do you mean "serious consequences"? The student would be questioned by police? |

He would be told "What you wrote was insensitive to others and hurt peoples feelings. You go home and think about that".
Then he would get home and the parents would call the school and raise hell because their kid got sent home for using freedom of speech.

You must be speaking from experience here. Some parents should not have children. |

That's not what he suggested or what he asked. He asked "Am I too racially sensitive?". If there's any implication behind the question it's "Is this kid racist?", not "Are Koreans racists". |

There's a racing game that's been heavily advertised in Korea which is a rip-off of Kart Rider (which in turn is a rip-off of Mario Kart, but I digress). In the game there is a black character as shown below. There's actually another black character which wears a half-eaten watermelon on his head. Is it racist? Well, in the picture you can see the hitler-haircut arayan youth behind him as well as the slit-eyed, panda suit-wearing 'chinaman.' So at least there is equal-opportunity racism going around.
Frankly, I don't know what to make of it. But I know that this kind of thing would not fly in America, as far as the representation of black people goes. You probably could get away with representing asian people that way, because, after all, America is pretty ignorant about Asian people. And I guess that's what it comes down to. Ignorance.

I wonder if a lot of Korea's anti-black racism is really their way of projecting their self-hatred on to someone else...
After all, underneath the 2 inches of white make-up, Koreans can be very dark skinned themselves...
So next time little Joon makes fun of blacks, be sure to bring a mirror to class and hold it in front of his face to remind him that he is really no different... |

Not really, seeing as the first major wave of asian immigration to america was over 200 years ago, I wouldn't say americans as nearly as ignorant of asians as Koreans are of black americans. Nor do I think that kind of characterisation, if applied to asians, in america, would be tolerated for a minute. Unless of course, you can find an equivilant and current image from the states, you're fishing with that one. |

In my experience, Koreans will freely admit that they are scared of black people. Americans often have a lot of strange ideas themselves but are relatively inhibited about voicing them.
And you can argue that for most Koreans it is just simple ignorance and not real racial malice. But whoever designs this racist stuff in Korea knows exactly what they are doing -- look at how exactly they copy the same stuff that Americans came up with. There's no way they could do that much research into a foreign culture without also finding out how hurtful it is. |

Asians were emigrating to America in the 1700s? You mean way back when it was just those ex-colonies on the eastern seaboard and everything to the west was virgin wilderness?
Overall, I find Korea's relative absence of moral policing on these issues rather refreshing. It not only makes for some highly diverting ads & attitudes on the part of the locals, but also some damn funny backflips by Western expats. Not the k-bashers, but the 'even-handed' relativists, the huggers and the self-proclaimed middle-roaders. Those silly sh*ts are more entertaining than circus clowns.

There were a number of Japanese in the northern colonies. Back home I have a book about this, the title of which escapes me. |
