can someone that does not have a korean social security number
connect a cell phone & internet in their apartment?
also im thinking of bringing my comp from US ..it will work in korea?
if so can someone tell me where?

Hi there,

Once you have your Alien Registration Card you can get a cell phone and an internet connection. Im not sure if this applies to the prepaid phones, where you purchase minutes everymonth, but with a regular account phone you have to put down a 200,000 won ($200) deposit. You get this money back when you cancel your service and pay your final bill, which you can do at any of the many phone shops around town.

As for internet service, just ask a Korea co-teacher or the secretary at your work to call an internet provider in your area. They will usually come out the next day to get you set up. I have the slow internet and pay 40,000 a month. It works fine and I dont feel any need to upgrade to the 70,000 a month service.

Your computer from home will work fine here. You shouldnt even need a converter for the power because most western computers are equipt to handle both kinds. You will need an adapter though. You can pick one up for a buck or two before you come or you can get one here. Computer are more expensive here, so you want one at home you are better off bringing it.

I really dont see where my misinformation was. My statement may have been a bit ambiguous or not as detailed as yours but it wasnt wrong. I said I didnt know how the prepaid phones work and when I said you needed your ARC card and a $200 deposit to get a cell phone, I meant that you needed that to get a monthly fee service. I assumed everyone would know you still have to buy a phone. Give me a bit of a break. Nobody else had given the guy any info and I was at work so I needed to give a quick response. If he was confused he could have asked for clarification.

My DSL internet from KT is 22,000 per month. The secretary arranged it for me, all she needeed was my bank book. Hooked-up within 24 hours. Easy!

Prepaid cells are good. I got mine for 70,000. I'ts 10,000 for 30 minutes of calling out. I don't use mine too much. 20,000 lasts me about 2 months. Depends. I make my calls as quick as possible.

I pay 37,400/month for my KT service. I think it's 28,000 before other charges. Not sure what those other charges are. It's a 100 kbs hook up. So, it's really fast.
