As weird as it sounds (and this may very well be a candidate for The Most Pointless Dave's Thread), I need a new gimmick for what to do with my hands when I'm standing around. Dressed for work, I wear what I will readily admit are dork clothes ; and because the majority of my pants were bought in Korea, and thus have shallow pockets, I can't pull off sticking my hands in my pockets.

Other options available to me are to

- hold my wrist behind my back (too Confucian for my taste)

- stand with arms akimbo (too high school coach, and with the population density -- that works on so many levels, by the way -- of Korea, people keep banging into my elbows)

- cross both arms in front of my chest (too standoffish/creepy old manish)

- grip my elbow from the front (too Scotty in Boogie Nights)

- clasp both hands in front of me (too effeminate)

and

- keep both arms at my sides, like a zombie

Needless to say, any style tips would be appreciated.

So vote 'arms akimbo,' then.

PS - no way to edit the poll question? That 2nd your should be a you're. Obviously this is the worst thing this week to happen to me.

I am one of the most fidgety people ever when it comes to my hands, I never know what to do with them, sometimes in my pockets, sometimes behind my back, sometimes by my sides. I feel awkard when it comes to standing around and doing nothing. I did have my hands in my pockets at a kindy open day thing once and my boss came and physically removed my hands from my pockets - not in front of the parents, I mean wtf?

Wow, without any sarcasm I must say that's a great question. I think about that a lot when I'm standing around. I tend to take cues from those in the vicinity, but 'arms folded across the chest' is always a good stand by. I also alternate regularly to 'hands in pockets' and 'hands behind back'.

At different times most of the options you have there. But if I'm standing on a subway or waiting around for someone then there's a 99% I'm reading something, so usually my hands are holding a book.

I think you're overthinking the issue. Just do whatever's most comfortable.

I'm a fidgeter, so I'd have to check all of the above.

That's the trouble: none of the options are comfortable. I was kinda hoping someone would fill me in on a revolutionary new technique.

I would like to know what suggestions the 2 people who voted 'other' have. Unfortunately, I suspect it's Vanislander and Beav who picked that one, the former perhaps not familiar with the word akimbo, the latter not reading the poll question stating when your/you're not holding anything.

Well, I picked "other" but it won't help you much. I mostly have my hands in my pockets. Sometimes I go with just the thumbs in the pockets, but this is probably just a varient of "hands on hips" but a little lower down. Sometimes (usually when I am in public and don't want to be bothered) I use the "arms crossed in front of me." Finally, when I am relaxing or have just been doing some exercise I interlock my hands behind my head. This improves breathing. It also works well when sitting in a chair. I'm also interested in any new ideas as this can be a source of discomfort for me from time to time as well.

For 30 years, I have been fighting a nervous habit of pulling my hair.
People think it's disgusting.
So I carry a rubber ball in my handbag.

In class, when I am tempted to pull my hair, I take out the rubber ball and squeeze it.

I voted 'other.'

When I'm standing around, out in the open, visible to all pedestrians in the area, I like to nestle my twig and berries on a whole-wheat bagel topped with western lettuce and brussel sprouts. Occasionally, there are chives also. My free hand is, more often than not, raised, 3rd Reich style, in unabashed obeisance to our Han overlords.

Edit: And the wonderfully tasteless post illustrates beautifully why one shouldn't come home from a soju bash at the in-laws and get on the computer.

I'm a little hesitant to take out my balls in public, and NO WAY am I going to squeeze them.

thumbs in the pockets, belt loops, hooked on the belt, sometimes finger tips, but never the two fist shoved down so hard I'm gonna lose my pants stance. Plus arms akimbo so, I vote other. It's pretty comfy though now I'll be all self-conscious. And it might not fly for guys.
