They are different because of different programs. If you go through the University of Wisconsin you will get a slightly different contract then if you go through a recruiter. You will also get a slightly different one again if you are hired direct.

Operative word is "slightly." The epik contract is still the grandaddy of them all. Its not perfect but in my experience its not held up as gospel but rather as a base to fall back on when all else fails. A good relationship with your boss trumps anything written in it. If you start finger-pointing at the contract, it will work against you.

I hardly ever see my boss. And I've had to "finger-point" the contract a number of times politely but firmly. And they've asked me to stay on a second year. It all depends on how you handle yourself. Polite--so that everyone saves face. Firm--so you don't get screwed. I do agree that one shouldn't get excessive and anal about the terms of the contract...but by the same token they shouldn't let the employer stretch it all out of shape either.

In the end it all depends on your relationship with your principal. Your principal can choose to enforce certain conditions of the contract (such as vacation), or not. Case in point: I had a great relationship with the prinicpal of my school for the first two years. He allowed me to bend the rules every which way, and in return I went the extra mile for the school. This year a new prinicipal has taken over. I also have a good relationship with him, but he's a stickler for the rules. So I'm not renewing. End of story.

Bottom line: you roll the dice, you take your chances with these public school positions, regardless of what's stipulated in the contract. Same as with any ESL job. Maybe even worse in some cases, because you may get stuck with a real bummer of a co-teacher. I was lucky.
