If I was your wife, I'd kick you in the pants and cut up your credit card.
(but until she reads this, enjoy your new rig!)

That looks ever so sweet..........
......Dang! I promised my wife it would be 3 years before my next upgrade!!! What was I thinking!!!!
Of course, if I just pay cash for stuff then I can swap in and out parts and she'll never know the difference!!!
7900GTX!!! That's a serious card. You have to get a good monitor to match that card.
I totally recommend a widescreen. Games look amazing. DVD and widescreen monitors are just peas and carrotts! Also, you can look at two things at once. You can get two decent sized webpages side by side at the same time. Or browse the internet while watching some show you downloaded.
I'll never go back to 4:3. |

hehehhe. Oh no my friend. You don't get it. There was a "trade" agreement attached to this. I don't make BIG purchases like this without consulting her first. TRUST ME!!!!! She is getting her share of stuff too. Also, this is my early Christmas present, my "congratulations" present for getting accepted into my Master's program back home, my 2 year wedding anniversary present, my....... |

alright now...wait a minute. I need help with monitors. According to the reviews I have been reading, widescreen monitors are DEFINITELY good for viewing movies. Conversely, the 19" standard seems to be getting better reviews in the "gaming" area. This is where I need yall's input. I found a nice 19" widescreen for around 320,000, but am afraid that my games won't look so great on it. |

I've got one 19" widescreen and one 19" regular hooked up to my machine. I much prefer the regular 19" screen. However I don't play games and can't help you out there.
When I get my new computer next year, I'm planning on getting a 24" screen and having that sitting next to the regular 19". the 19" widescreen will then stay with current computer (i.e. for the wife) |

I rejected the idea of a 19'' widescreen or 19'' 4:3 monitor. In the store they just looked a little too small.
I wanted a significant jump from my old 17''. I don't see the point in just upping the monitor size by a small amount. Especially if the PC has a lot of power under the hood.
If you are going to play games at all there are two main things to consider when choosing any LCD of any shape.
Response time......in ms(miliseconds) Lower is better. A good gaming LCD will have a response time of less than 8ms.
Contrast......Higher is better. A ratio of 800:1 is good. 1000:1 is excellent.
Here's a good article comparing a few 20.1 widescreens. Mine is in there. The Viewsonic. http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/06/27/xxl_displays/
I should say that DVD movies look great on widescreen monitors, but only because they match the format of the movie with no blackbars top and bottom. The actual picture quality from a computer DVD drive onto and LCD is actually quite poor compared to regular old TV. |

Yeah, the PowerLab LCDs are nice.
Personally, I'd jump for a 20" rather than a 19" because of the resolution (19" usually max out at 1280x1024, 20" usually max out at 1600x1200), and for the additional size - you may think an extra inch doesn't matter, but there's millions of spams a day saying otherwise. But I digress...
Yeah, I like the 19" but check a few of the 20" ones, especially if they have 8ms refresh and a 700:1 or 1000:1 ratio. Lower than 8ms refresh doesn't seem to make a huge difference.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Now, let me get this straight:
the lower the refresh rate 8ms or less, the better?
the higher the ratio 800:1 or 1000:1 the better? |

Faster reponse times are better. Less (or almost no) tearing in games. Higher contrast ratios are better at displaying a wider range from absolute white to absolute black. Higher is better.
cl, with that rig, don't sell it short with a ho-hum monitor. Listen to eamo on this one. |

yeah. I am. So in summary, what are the minimum specs. I should go for on my monitor?
Thus far, it'll definitely be a 19" standard screen.
8ms?
1000:1 ? |

I bought this monitor at the beginning of July and am satisfied with it. If you want a widescreen it's an excellent monitor. My only regret is that I didn't get a full size.
my full-size also doubles as an LCD tv. I bought it December 2004 and you can still get it online here the refresh is 8ms but the contrast is only 700:1 - even so I'm quite happy with it. |
