I saw 괴물 yesterday. I'll say, if you care, that I really liked it. I only understood about 50% of the dialog (I couldn't understand a damn thing the grandpa said) but it was enough to enjoy it. This question is, is it anti-American?
I say, yes, it is anti-American government. But it's not anti-American person. I say that because all the American scientists and officials in the movie are more or less evil. But then there's that American dude who rushes off to save everybody in the first scene. And the dude has a Korean girlfriend no less! |

I think its pretty much anti-any government. The Koreans are not exactly treated any better by the film.
There was a waygook "hero", which was nice to see, but that's not unprecedented; WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL and PLEASE TEACH ME ENGLISH both feature very sympathetic Western characters. |

You might find this interesting.
The Korea Times published an article on some companies that dumped toxic chemicals into streams. I will place part of the article and link below. If you go to the webpage, please scroll down. It is the second story on the page. The first story is Shameless Supply of Bad Food.
Dumping of Toxic Chemicals Into Streams
It is shocking news that 29 timber companies were found to have released 271 tons of formalin over the past three years into streams feeding the Han River, the main source of drinking water for Seoul and Kyonggi Province. Formalin is basically a watered-down version of the highly toxic formaldehyde.

Here is an article excerpt from the JoongAng Daily.
15 held for dumping poison into Han
Seoul prosecutors yesterday said they have indicted 15 people for dumping more than 270 tons of a toxic chemical into a tributary of the Han River, just three kilometers (1.9 miles) from locations where drinking water for Seoul is collected.

Here is an excerpt from an article on the dumping by the person that influenced the creation of the movie.
U.S. man is found guilty of polluting Han River
A diplomatic dispute appears to be brewing following a guilty verdict reached in absentia yesterday by the Seoul District Court involving Albert McFarland, an American civilian employee of the U.S. military's mortuary, accused of discharging toxic chemicals into Seoul's Han River.
The court ruling imposed a six-month prison term on Mr. McFarland who was found guilty of discharging 24 gallons of formaldehyde into the river in February, 2000.

Here is an article excerpt on toxic waste.
Toxic waste counted at 31,000 tons in 2000
The Environment Ministry reported Wednesday that 31,000 metric tons of harmful waste chemical matter were released into Korean air, water and soil in 2000.

Are Americans really that insecure that they can feel threatened by this movie? That NY Times article is so filled with anger it's just retarded. |

Its an incredibly small part of the film. I think much more interesting is that the rabidly anti-Japanese HANBADO hasn't really caught on at the box office. Now, it may well be that its a crap film, (but that didn't stop SILMIDO, TAEGUKGI and THE KING AND THE CLOWN, did it?), but its nice to know that merely trading in resentment against another country doesn't guarantee automatic box office gold.
(That said, of course, its still the third highest grossing movie of the year, but nowhere near what was predicted) |

i caught a little bit of that vibe, but it did not seem to be the base note. as in welcome to dongmakgol it seemed to me that they were (awkwardly accomplished as it were) trying to be somewhat balanced about it. good flick. |
