Results to my quiz : Q (1) = Thailand.
Question (2) = Korea.
Someone said they had horrible experiences in Thailand. I've just got the warmest feelings for the Thai people. Hell, years ago I nearly died up near the Golden Triangle (chronic ameobic dysentary). I was being supported by my girlfriend and a Thai man into a 'hospital' - and the local Thais were coming up to me and squeezing my wrist. I've never felt more like 'death warmed up' but their nam jai (and some medicine ) saw me through. "Mai pen rai." |

Hi,
I am currently doing my TEFL course in the UK and was planning to come over to South Korea in February to teach for a year. I have just left uni and it would be my first time teaching, I am mainly doing it because I am not ready to get a job back home and want to experience another culture. I have been reading some of the posts on this website and have been slightly put off about South Korea, many of you don't seem to rate it highly. I also have the opportunity to teach in Thailand for the year instead and am now wondering whether I would be better going there.
I realise that every foreign country is difficult, different and a challenge to live in, but many people really sound as though they aren't having a good time. Obviously the money is better in South Korea, but that isn't my main concern - I am more interested in the experience. So where should I go, South Korea or Thailand???
Your advice would be really helpful. Thanks. |
Totally depends on what you want man. As previously said for money....Korea. There are a lot of negative statements about korea on these forums. But you can have a lot of positive experiences here as well, I have had some good times...and some bad times (nothing really bad..mostly from boredom). I plan on doing one more year here...for the money, then I want to go to Thailand for a year...I went to Thailand for vacation and loved it (the food, weather, cost of living, beaches, etc.). I don't plan on getting a job in bangkok....somewhere near the beach.
If you feel you can adjust to a different culture (food, people, weather) you will be fine. Like I said before, you can have fun in korea, I have met some pretty cool Korean people, and some idiots...but wherever you are you going to find that.
If you have any questions...let me know.... |

dude, it has to be thailand! its fun here, but they are in a league of their own over in thailand. Also you get opportunities to do tefl courses if you dont have one. They also have the best beaches and the most friendly people i have seen or met. The food is a miillllllllion times better than korea, and everyone already seems to speak English, so half yer job's done already! DEFINITELY Thailand!!!!! |

Your question is far to general to offer and useful advice. No idea about your hobbies, preferences, ect.I suggest buying the Lonely Planet books for the countries you are considering to visit, reading them, and based on what you see in there, deciding where you'd want to live. |
I think his / her question is very straightforward.
I have been to Thailand and just finished a contract in Korea. I am in a similar position, that is money doesn't matter much. I would suggest you avoid Korea like the plague and go to Thailand. I start a new job in Laos next month. It is very similar to Thailand in many ways.
Korea is a nice place although it has lots of faults. The best thing about Korea is the money, hands down. If that is secondary, don't go. It's that simple.
Please note that I had a dream job in Korea by most, if not all, standards![/quote]
Details please. I like to hearing what I'm missing. |

Just one thing to add.
If you work in Thailand, you get the holidays all the locals do. That's when all the beaches are chock full.
If money is not an issue, take a month holiday before you start work there. |

Hmmm....Sounds just like Korea. Is it always peak season in Thailand too? |

Hi,
I just returned from doing summer camp in Korea and I loved every minute of it. I hate to say it, but who you teach with and the school you work for can make or break your experience. My Korean American friends were worried I was not in Seoul, but I had an incredible time in a town about an hour or an hour and a half outside of Seoul. Korea is a great place to take weekend trips because the train system is so extensive.
I know nothing about Thailand, but I wouldn't trade my experience in Korea for anything. The kids were great and although the Korean ways sometimes seem backwards, they work hard to please.
Good luck making a decision. |

I remember one poster, Teacher541, who would work at a uni then take his family to Thailand for a month or two during vacation. That's probably a sweet setup.
Or save a nest egg in Korea and then spend six months in Thailand NOT WORKING. That's something I've been long considering. |

So if one didn't work, how long would 10 million won last on a Thai island? |

Tiger Beer is right. Thailand is not as cheap as people like to think. Of course it's possible to live on like US$3 a day like some of the locals do, but that just sucks (we're talking crappy street vendor udon for lunch and dinner everyday ad nauseum)... But if you're in a nicer part of Bangkok, or on one of the more club-med style islands like Samui, and want to have fun all the time, you could blow several grand US in a month without trying.
I went to Bangkok about a year ago with around 400,000 Japanese yen (about US$4000) and spent it all after 6 weeks (and I was even staying at a friend's place for free)... that's nearly a grand a week (we went a bit nuts though, mind you)... But if you're living there and don't have crazy nights out everyday drinking at fancy clubs etc. and don't shop too much you can of course live on a fraction of that amount. But don't expect to live it large without having a sizeable amount of cash. You gotta pay to play...
But the first time I went to Thailand I was pretty much broke and can still vouch that it is a way more fun place to be poor in than Korea. It's really a great country, I especially love Thai people. If you can get a decent job there go for it. You won't get rich, but you'll probably have a blast. |

Please trust me on this one. Between Korea and Thailand Yes, the money is certainly going to be better in Korea. No contest. I'll also say Korea is quite safe and has reasonably priced domestic transportation and some people here can be quite nice.
But please also trust me on this. Having worked and lived in both countries, if you really want a positive Asian experience just get your ass to Thailand. Most expats here would hop the first flight out if the Thais could offer a similar salary. Where do most Korean expats escape to on their Asian vacation? Thailand. Vietnam. Philippines.
Thailand is beautiful man, it's on par with Europe as a travel destination but of course it's quite different culturally. Besides the work and pay situation it's simply on a different level from industrialized Korea. The Thais have an extremely rich culture, kick-ass delicious, healthy and cheap local street food along with lots of well prepared foreign foods (Nigerian, English breakfasts, Indian, you name it), excellent public health and hospitals, wonderful local fruit, way better shoppping and variety than here, it's close to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, etc., has some of the most beautiful temples in the world, the skytrain, river taxis, elephants, monkeys, great bookstores, some of the best beaches in the world, good smelling and bustling street markets, a laid-back very friendly population and an acceptance of other cultures, peoples and products and beautiful locally produced products as well. It's also a photographer's paradise. No offeense to anyone but the overall vibe you'll get in Thailand just trounces that of Korea.
That said, there are a few things to remember in Thailand - never, ever mock the King or Buddha in public, and never, eer, ever try to bring illegal drugs in or out. Thai jails are hell. Oh, and watch out - there are a few tourist scams to get you to buy jewelry and so on, and some of the nice local ladies aren't exactly, well...ladies . Just use your common sense and you'll be fine. If you can respect those few rules and maybe learn a few basic phrases and not shout or act like an arrogant tourist they'll treat you like a brother.
Obviously, no matter which country you choose to work in, research the conditions and try to contact an expat employee form your prospective place of employment. For more info and links to more detailed Thailand info I've been told this site is good: http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/teaching.html Good luck and PM me if you have any questions. |
thanks for the goods...toying with the idea of moving to Thailand next year. Two quick questions...
#1: how'd you hold up in the heat?
#2: Do you have any info on musical opportunities there, such as playing in bands, giggin, etc.? Do know any folks playing music there? How big is the live music scene (say, in Bangkok?)?
Any info will be great help...thanks! |
