Mel Gibson's not a Catholic. He follows a sect whose leader, dissident French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated by the pope. This sect believes the faith has been betrayed by false popes since Vatican II, etc.

Even if you're not interested in Mel's convictions or Catholicism, it is interesting to note that here, too, he's running his own show.
Screw the faith, it's my f***ing church
Screw the law, it's my f***ing car
Screw sobriety of social context, it's my f***ing opinion
Apologies if this profile is too crassly drawn. |

When you put it in that context, he sounds an awful lot like Russel Crowe.
Itaewonguy, what do those two have in common? |

What do you think of Mel Gibson since his drunken dirty mouth has gotten him in so much trouble?
I still respect the man. Braveheart is a classic. I've heard good things about The Passion of The Christ, but have not seen it yet. |
i've always been indifferent towards the guy - probably because i never knew he was so opinionated.
the more i heard of his opinions, the less and less i want to hear them. |

That's debatable. Don't confuse fame with talent. |

Wrong. Mel Gibson is a Catholic - a traditional Catholic. Archbishop Lefebvre may have been excommunicated (wrongly as many, if not all, traditional Catholics believe), but none of the lay Catholics who celebrate the tridentine mass were. |

mel gibson - bad actor who clings to an archaic, bizarre, cultish religion that believes in virgin births and talking plants.
simply put, "fruitcake" - whose opinions on anything, especially world jewry - should be summarily ignored. |

What are the odds that before Sideshow Mel got pulled over, he was slamming vodka while watching _The Hebrew Hammer_ in his car? |

I don't know what that is but you certainly have a way of making it sound like a euphemism for something obscene.

Wrong. He's not a traditional Catholic. He's a Traditionalist. A formal name for a formal sect whose leader was booted for a reason.
Not that this fine point will adhere to a lesser mind bent on hate, but for the sake of torment, traditional Catholics and Traditionalists are quite separate... ecumenicism, anti-Semitism, and the existence of a pope being defining issues. Some former Catholics have never accepted JPII's attempts to find common ground between different faiths (e.g. Catholicism and Protestantism, Catholicism and Judaism, Catholicism and Greek Orthodox Church, etc.) and have left because of it. Maybe it's good that Traditionalists separated themselves and then got their leader booted. Maybe not. But it happened. I can understand the apologist motive for a Traditionalist, although they wouldn't necessarily find any company with a traditional Catholic.
The Baha'i faith had a similar problem in the 1980's with a group in Los Angeles who started out as Baha'is, then started veering quite sharply from the tenets of the faith (some scandalous stuff) and were summarily booted (no longer representing any ability to teach the Baha'i faith) although they continued to claim differently. |
