I was just approached to teach a fellow ( Korean ) teacher's son and his friend... twice a week... one hour classes... in the teacher's home.

The legality of teaching in the teacher's home is distressing, I will attempt to negotiate teaching at the school and getting the legitimacy/legality ironed out as much as possible.

Supposedly the kids are basic middle school level. The mom has suggested 200,000 per month (about 8 hours) for her son (she drives me to work everyday too)... is this a reasonable rate? Should I ask the same amount for the other student as well.

I wouldn't do it if I where you. Should something go afoul you can bet your details will be zinging there way to immigration in a flat second. What I would do is find another waygook to foist the kid off onto. A waygook that gives out a bogus name for teaching privates.

Crapping where you eat is never a good idea. Besides, for two kids, you should be getting at least 320 for that number of hours. Take cabs to work. You are about to get used.

I just got offered another one. I mentioned the legality issue and was told that this is a secret... doh... it's my first actual day of work here. That's 3 students... doh doh doh... I already tenatively agreed. It really doesn't sound as if they want to go the legitimate route.

Is your boss okay with you teaching these kids? It seems like direct competition with the hogwon, not to mention the fact the teachers there apparently don't think it's worth enrolling their own kids. What does that say about the school? In any case, make sure you have the permission of the institution because there is no chance of this being kept a secret.

It's at a public school.

What would I have to do to get these to be legitimate lessons?

I really don't mind the rate so much, I like the chance at being able to implement/use my own teaching style and curriculuum.

It's a great little school though and a super cushy job, I would hate to lose it and get deported.

Is it legal if I teach the lessons at my school? I have heard that this is the case at hagwons?

200.000/8 = 25.000

a bit cheap if you calc that 1 hour of private takes 1 hour of preaparations

200.000/16 = 12.500

But price setting in your situation is a bit more "person dependent".

i taught teachers' kids for over 2 years.............no problems ever, they all knew it was illegal but nobody said anything...........for all i know, the whole school may have known, didn't care, nothing ever happened......
