I got lucky at my Haggie, after years of problems on all fronts a Korean American sat the Wongja down and said " Hey, it's like this..."
Awahhh ! Point was taken, face was saved and apart from being payed late (which he got away with because he was super cool in other ways) all the waygooks were happier. The K teachers were another story however...

Good K-A!

leave the hogwon and go work in a real school, problem solved!

Unless you're a newbie with nothing but a BA and no experience, theres no reason to still be in the performing arts.

In general, this deserves an 'A.'

Rule #5 Foreigners seem to think of break times as their time to collect their thoughts, mentally review their previous class and organise themselves for the next lot of paid contact hours. Last minute photocopying, kindy sandwich class prep, photo shoots and/or surprise paperwork will not be happily undertaken unless first you ask them nicely.

Rule #2 Routine:

Foreigners seem to like schedules so they know when, what and who they are teaching! If you make a schedule, try to stick with it for at least a week.

Rule # 3 Communication:

Foreigners need communication, it doesn't have to be in English (but it helps). It can be hand signals, a letter, a diagram, a map, etc.
But they CAN NOT read your mind.
They don't know you have changed the schedule two days after posting it! (See Routine)

Rule # 4 Toilet Training:

Word up!

Most foreigners assume that everything they need will be in the washroom. Especially T.P. and SOAP. The new ones will not think to bring these with them, and they may (mostly females) stay there for an extended period of time waiting for someone to come in so they can ask for some T.P.

Gotta look out for the females because this ensures survival of the (temporary, at least) group.

Word.

Rule No. 7 Letting the students know there has been a change of classroom without notifying the teacher may be construed by said teacher as a problem. Unless they like walking around looking for their classrooms after the bell has rung.

Agreed: This is the biggest pain out there!

Dan,

Now I know why Cerri informed me that you're a decent-enough fellow: It's because you have a sense of empathy.

Carry on, Dan.

genius idea.. they'd never pay for it though so you'd have to send it out for free. why not compile the best suggestions here into an e-booklet with fancy pictures; you could probably get in the newspapers and then you'd be well on your way.
i think the most important rules would be don't promise what you can't/won't deliver, and don't move the goalposts (ie. you used to teach x classes, now you'll teach x plus 10 and you'll be writing loads of stupid reports without any increase in payment). when i was a hakwon monkey those were my biggest complaints. also i would suggest supporting the teacher in disciplinary issues; if you don't do this, decent teachers will leave and you'll just end up with the slack still-drunk-from-the-night-before clock-watchers.

At my public school my whitey wrangler (another posters term that I like and just stole) has just such a manual. It is about 4 inches thick. It is written in Korean so other than some suff about how to get your waygook a ARC and such I have no idea what it says. However, as of this date no twizzler licorice rope or hand licks have been exchanged.

Rule number 1. Don't lie to your Westerner. Even to save face. Repeat, don't lie to a Westerner. They will never trust you after that. If you lie, your relationship with them is dead. Repeat - dead.

If you have a lone foreigner, remember that they don't understand what you're talking about. if they request to sit out of meetings/social gatherings because they feel uncomfortable, do not take offence.

And remember they probably think and percieve things differently to you, as they're not Korean.
