I order vegetable kimbap (야채김밥), and it's got ham in it.

I order salad kimbap (샐러드 김밥), and it's got ham in it.

I see a package of mixed vegetables (야채) in Carrefour's freezer section, and it's got ham in it.

Is ham a vegetable in Korea?

No, but you have to be really specific about these things if you want vegetable kimbap, salad kimbap, etc., without ham. Smile

Haha, welcome to my world. I don't eat pork and always make sure to tell the food service people where I go to eat, but somehow a ubiquitous slice/cube/rasher of the stuff occaisionally still creeps into my meal.

I'll bet you next month's salary that it isn't ham. It is almost certainly Spam. Spam is NOT ham.

I assume it's because you call it just 햄 without using the word 고기.

This reminds me of when I was studying in Germany during my vegetarian years(which are back, by the way) and I was strolling around lovely Konstanz with a group of other veggies when Deirdre, one among us, grew a bit peckish.

We soon came across a bakery(you can't really go more than two blocks without running into one) and Deirdre, whose German was quite good briskly entered the Backerei and returned with a roll of some sort.

All of a sudden(she is one of those vegetarians... Rolling Eyes ) she started screaming and squawking and spitting and sputtering and saying: "It's got Speck in it!! I asked her if there was meat in it, and she said no!"

Speck, for the uninitiated, is bacon, of the "bits" variety, auf Deutsch.

So we returned to the backery, and I helped Deirdre out, as she was still suffering from an aggravated attack of apoplexy. I said(and for the gender/preposition agreement police out there, my German is rustig, so back off):

"Entschuldigung, aber, hier ist Fleisch." (Excuse me, but there is meat in this...)

to which the proprietor said: "Wie bitte? Wo?" (What? Where?)

"Hier. In dieser Brotchen. Sieh!" (Here. In this roll. Look!)

And she looked down at what remained of the roll and chuckled. Then said:

"Das? Das ist Speck...!" (That? That's bacon!)

At which point I gave her one of those pointed, And??? looks, which she picked up on. And thus she pointedly replied:

"Speck? Speck ist nicht Fleisch!"

Ah, those crazy continentals...

You're on, Mr. gang. (or it is Mr. jee?) Next time you're back in the ROK.

When I was a wet behind the ears newbie I went for my first grocery store adventure and found a whole rack of Spam, but no ham anywhere. I looked up and down all the aisles and in all the coolers, next to the dairy and below the cheese. No ham anywhere.

A few days later I made my first Korean friend. One of my first questions was, "Where's the ham?" He said, "Anyplace ham is." I started jumping for joy. "Show me! Show me!"

So we went on a trip to the grocery store. He led me right up to the Spam display. I remember rolling on the floor in agony, crying and thrashing at the injustice of it all.
