the UAE has an even higher ratio, it is really disgusting. something like 2:1.

214 men/100 women according to the economist's world in figures- 2006. I am guessing it is due to the high number of south asian expats there who send their money back home to support their families. I am not sure if that figure is for the total population or just emirate citizens. I hope this is the explanation for it. If not, then that really is horrific.

Good info, thanks. But, why is the ratio above 1 for each country, and why is the average 1.05? I believe the average should naturally be less than 1 (more females).

I didn't know that countries in other regions of the world have the same problem China now faces.

Can the strong Eastern European representation in the <1 category be attributed to a large number of the able bodied male population working elsewhere in Europe to send money home (amongst other things)?

Russia and China have opposite problems. My guess will be that Russian women will start pouring more into there

I think the article is missing the untold numbers of undocumented girl babies.

I'm not saying it evens out, but I'm pretty sure a lot of girls being born are off the books.
