| 214 men/100 women according to the economist's world in figures- 2006. I am guessing it is due to the high number of south asian expats there who send their money back home to support their families. I am not sure if that figure is for the total population or just emirate citizens. I hope this is the explanation for it. If not, then that really is horrific. |

Yes they do. Vietnam is the largest exporter of women in the world today.
The majority of their population is made up of young people who were born after the Vietnam War. The majority of women are very beautiful and young, mostly less than 30 years of age, highly and exportable to many men in Korea. |
Does anyone else find this terminology the "export" of women, and the description of "beautiful and young" Vietamese women as "highly exportable" a bit offensive besides me? Are they bushels of corn? BMW's? I suppose that the "transaction" does take place but is it really like a commodities market? I can't help but think of slavery. |

The figure you quoted is for the total population including numerous single male expat workers. The Economist's list I believe does not examine birth rates, and this therefore does not compare to the uneven birth rates in China, Taiwan, Singapore, India, and Korea.
Does anyone have a link to a list of countries with gender imbalances of newborns? Interesting topic... |

Good info, thanks. But, why is the ratio above 1 for each country, and why is the average 1.05? I believe the average should naturally be less than 1 (more females).
I didn't know that countries in other regions of the world have the same problem China now faces. |

Males and females are produced in approximately equal numbers in most species with separate sexes, regardless of the mechanism of sex determination.
The global average for humans is that 105 males are born for every 100 females. This ratio may be different at conception. It could be that female embryos are more likely to be miscarried
It is not clear how parental effort in raising children is linked to the way that a fetus's sex is determined as an embryo.
The reasons are not exactly known..For an interesting overview of the topic, this is good..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_ratio
The first listing (above) is for ratio at birth only. The second shows the number of actual males vs females in the population now. So..South Korea (because of its selective abortion) produces a high ratio- 108 boys to every 100 girls at birth. However this has not yet caught up with the population demographics now, (except in the recent, younger generation). |

Can the strong Eastern European representation in the <1 category be attributed to a large number of the able bodied male population working elsewhere in Europe to send money home (amongst other things)?
Or is there just something in the water? :D

At least in Russia, maybe others too, the men have in recent times drunk themselves into early graves. The numbers are startling actually. |

I also heard in parts of eastern europe it is common to not register a birth until the infant has survived 7 days first. thus, a lot of infant mortality goes unreported. In harsh or poor conditions it may be that more male infants survive than females. who knows?
it fascinates me actually. bearing in mind the sex of reptiles depends on the temperature the eggs develop in... I wonder why some nations have a higher ratio of females at birth?
Quote the wikipedia:
"Reported sex ratios at birth -- outside the typical range of 103:100 to 107:100 -- thus call for an explanation of some kind. In other populations that have witnessed declining sex ratios, researchers have suggested that ecological factors may be at work. In all such reports, it is important to exclude plausible alternative explanations"
Sex selective abortions aside..you are left with ecological factors. I heard once that the hormones injected into beef had affected sex ratios in the population of humans. |

I think the article is missing the untold numbers of undocumented girl babies.
I'm not saying it evens out, but I'm pretty sure a lot of girls being born are off the books. |
