I put up an ad for a job near me on dave's Korean job board. And I got one response ONLY. And that was from a 60 year old black dude who didn't know his email address.

Is that strange ? or has the Nuke up North thing scared all the teachers away ?

LOL Almost scared me away. But I'll tell you I was sure a lot more picky once the nuke testing started. I honestly don't think there is any danger and I knew I would be able to find a better job at great pay.

Good news. Looking at maybe (?) 3.0 starting next contract go-around. Nice. Combination of NK nukes and SK's reputation.

It was election day today in the US. Maybe that has something to do with it.

What's wrong with a 60 year old black dude? Or rather, why was it neccessary to point out those particular characteristics?

Sounds like it was either:

a) so substandard that no-one was interested,
b) located so far from civilization that no-one was interested even if it was superior,
c) so standard and equal same/same to all the others that there was nothing to make it stand out from the crowd so no offers.

There are thousands of postings every month for teachers.

Ask yourself, "In a competetive market, why would anyone consider our offer above another?"

If you can't think of any good reason, based on your offer/advertisement, then you have your answer.

Hmm, I did something similar recently and got a few good candidates, at least in my opinion, but the problem is the director is picky, and seems to be only looking at the pictures! So, my advice to people is to get the best photo possible. I cannot emphasize this enough.

In addition, I keep getting over-qualified people for what the job is - teaching adults, split shift, basic pay;a good starter kind of position for someone who wants to teach adults...... and most people aren't really reading the ad and ask me questions that are clearly answered.

I think you need a good opening line to get interest and just state the conditions, most people aren't reading the ad anyway. If I did it again that's what I'd do.

It's very competitive labor (English teacher) market out there. There are more jobs out there than teachers. They are mostly crappy offers.

If you are offering same level of pay and types of benefits as the other schools, guess what, you most likely are not going to get a lot of hits from teachers.

Try offering something unique like 3 million/month, free fully furnished single apt with all bills paid with housekeeper, 2 months of vacation, guaranteed quarterly bonus, 80 teaching hours/month, etc. etc. etc....

You'll get our attention real quick. Save your headache and offer us something better than other crappy offers.

A little from column "A" and A LOT from column "B"- these Korean hogwan owners have burned too many people and they have earned their bad reputations.

... I never said there was anything wrong with him. Although I was a little exasperated that he sent the wrong email address. And the picture he sent was upside down and placed him in the very back of a dark room.

Nothing wrong with being 60, nothing wrong with being black. But those were the most distinguishable features that I could remember. And my tone was defeatist because of the quality of his application...

Nothing is wrong with a 60 year old black dude from our point of view but from a Korean's point of view everything is wrong with a 60 year old black dude.

Unfortunately, ageism and racism play a big part in hiring practices in this country.

If you've been in Korea long enough, you'd know this, that's probably why he/she pointed this out. From a Korean point of view this is probably the worst type of applicant they could hope for.

Okay, just noticed he/she beat me to the explanation but what I said is still true in Korea unfortunately.

Yes, as BB stated, those particular characteristics are relevant in this case.

So, dbee, got any more applicants yet?

I was curious to see that the job boards here no longer show the number of hits a particular job post has got. The number of hits most jobs got here used to be very impressive. Now... no idea how many hits they are getting. Can't be a good sign, removing that feature. [Sir modder, please, don't delete my whole post... just the offending section.]
