Friendly match
South Korea 0-1 Chile
A pretty dull match in front of a tiny crowd. Not the best start for Heo Jung-moo (the first Korean to take charge of the Korean team in seven years).
The England based players will be there for the Turkmenistan match though and hopefully, as the first World Cup qualifier, it will generate more excitement.
Thanks to holyjoe for the photo link.

Tickets: 20k~50k, on sale from Monday January 21st
Tickets available from branches of Hana Bank and via the KFA website.
February 6th: Turkmenistan (h) - World Cup qualification

February 20th: North Korea (Chonqing, China) - East Asian Championship
February 23th: Japan (Chonqing, China) - East Asian Championship
March 26th: North Korea (a) - World Cup qualification

June 14th: Turkmenistan (a) - World Cup qualification

If Korea survives this set of qualifiers (they should, as they only need to finish in the top-2 in this group (other teams: Nth Korea, Jordan, Turmenistan)) they will qualify for the final round of World Cup qualifiers where they will meet slightly bigger fish (Australia, Japan, Iran etc.).
Matches to take place between 15 October 2008 and 9 September 2009, which probably means two more matches in 2008.
Top-4 in Asia qualify for the World Cup, 5th placed team will play the Oceania champion (most likely New Zealand) for the final spot at the World Cup.
Recent Olympic team results:
FC Thun (Switzerland) 0-0 S Korea Olymp
Elche FC (Spain) 2-2 S Korea Olymp
S Korea Olymp 1-0 FC Malaga (Spain)
S Korea Olymp 0-2 Sparta Praha (Czech Rep) |

The fact that Huh Jung-moo was hired as coach shows the Korean Football Association doesn't give a squat about the national team anymore. Korea has failed to score a goal in 506 minutes dating back to the Asian Cup last year. |

Am I right assuming those suspended players from last year still can't play? The goalie grandfather and the other drunkards.
It certainly won't help their case. |

I think that their plan is to qualify for the final stage of the qualifiers and then go for a big name. At the moment, with two years to go to the next World Cup, it is difficult to find a big name Euro coach whod be willing to move to Sparkling. Look at Advocaat he took over just months before Korea took part in the last WC.
Tonight won't be pretty but Korea will do enough to win 1-0. |

korea pulled the finger a bit and did in the end win 4-0. while they (Turmenistan) were the weakest team in the group is still didn't see it on the horion so my hat goes down to SK and that 0-0 merchant Huh Jung-moo ... wonder if they get any wins at the North East Asian Championship though... |

Scary thought Park Chu-young is the second most experienced player here (behind Kim Nam-il).
China desperately wants to shake the "Korea-phobia" monkey off its back, having never beaten the Koreans.

North Korea v Japan
Just kicked-off
Have to admit, the Chinese are really suffering from Korea-phobia when it comes to playing the Koreans at the round ball game. Certainly had a great chance of putting their barren run against the Koreans to an end (26 matches, no wins) but just fell apart.
At the same time the Koreans are doing better under Huh Jung-moo then I ever thought they would though admittedly its early days still. |

East Asian Championship
China 0-1 Japan
Yamase 17'
Japan beat hosts China in East Asian football
South Korea 1-1 North Korea
Did not see this match so don't know what happened. One source is reporting this:
18' [1 - 0] K. Seol -- should be K. Yeom, I guess
...........................48' P.C. Jin (Red)
...........................72' [1 - 1] C. Tese
And another this:
Scoring
0-1 Kore Rep.:21min. 11/YEOM Ki Hun
1-1 DPR Korea:73min. 12/JONG Tae Se
Previous results:
China 2-3 South Korea
Japan 1-1 North Korea
Table:
Code: |
1. South Korea 4 points, +1 goal difference, 4:3 goals
2. Japan 4 points, +1 goal difference, 2:1 goals
3. North Korea 2 points, 0 goal difference, 2:2 goals
4. China 0 points, -2 goal difference, 2:4 goals
|
Final round:
Saturday, 23 Feb 2008 18:15 Japan vs. South Korea, 20:45 China PR vs. North Korea
The winner of the South Korea v Japan match will win this championship.
However, if South Korea draws with Japan, they will likely win this championship. They will certainly finish higher than Japan.
North Korea would then need to beat China by two clear goals to take the championship away from South Korea.
If North Korea wins by one goal, the winner will be decided not on points or goal difference but on who scores more goals. |
