Below is a description I got while researching where to live in Korea. Let me know what you think, whether you agree.
Thanks
"Coastal City dubbed by its city council as "The city of beautiful people" - Known for Suncheon Bay and the many tourist attractions and temples - Home to Naganeupseong Folk Village" |

Suncheon's quite a nice place. It's got around 250,000 people, fairly relaxed pace of life, good Korean food, not too many Western franchises but Gwangju's only just on an hour up the road, plenty of Western-style coffee shops mushrooming over the place, couple of big supermarkets.
There's about 200 English teachers in town, most live in Shidae apartments and many go to the two expat bars in town so finding fellow Westerners is no hassle. The locals are generally quite nice though a tad rustic.
I've been here for more than two and a half years and quite like it. There's still plenty of remants of 'old' Korea though unfortunately in 10 years that'll probably disappear.
It's a medium-sized city with plenty of mountains and hiking tracks around. It's surrounded by farmland, mountains and the coast. So, if you're a fairly independent, outdoors-type who would like to get a taste of regional Korea with some Western comforts, it's a good place. Otherwise, it could get a bit boring if you're more a big city person.

Suncheon is the city to the north of my town (Yeosu). Suncheon has a lot more foreigners -- 200 or 300! Tons! It also has a lot of amenities in comparison to most other smaller southern cities.
However, Suncheon isn't as pretty as a true coastal city. Suncheon does have a bay, but it's not as nice as islands and ocean. Also, Suncheon is fairly dirty.
Nagan village is north of Suncheon and is worth a visit *once.* There's some great riding around Suncheon (Sangsa dam) if you're into motorcycles. Plenty of hiking, too, like most of Korea. |

It really depends on what you want in a city. If you want lots of amenities -- Costco for foreign foods and such, foreigner bars, etc. -- you'll probably be happier in somewhere like Seoul, Busan, Daegu or Daejeon. If you want a quieter place that's more scenic, you might be happier in somewhere like Yeosu, Wando, Mokpo, or Geoje. |

I lived in Suncheon for six years. Now I live in Daejeon. I very much enjoy coming back to Suncheon for short visits. Gotta love the food in the area. IMHO Suncheon/Gyang-yang/Beol-Gyo area has the best Korean food in all of Korea.
People in Suncheon are a bit rustic but quite friendly and I had tons of Korean friends. Most westerners do live in Shidae Apts (as do alot of Korean gangsters, pimps, coffe girls, prostitutes). But the Apts are pretty good if small.
If you are ok with a bit of a rural setting I heartily recommend Suncheon. |
