Hi all -
What should I expect to be wearing to work? Does it vary widely from place to place? I'm going to have a job at a hagwon in Seoul if that makes any difference. Also, I'm a guy so I don't need any advice about skirt length, etc. |

I've seen everything from collared shirts, ties and slacks to shorts and flip-flops. Guess it depends on A) your school and B) how seriously you take your job. |

Ask the recruiter or whomever your contact is at the school. Different hagwons have different rules. At all my previous hagwons I had to wear slippers but could wear casual dress. At my current one I have to wear a button shirt with a tie (but can wear jeans) and get to wear my street shoes.
You're asking your question in the wrong place. No one here knows the specific requirements at your academy. |

Am I the only one that wears my shoes while all the Koreans wear slippers? The floor is disgustingly filthy at my after school place, so I don't even bother taking them off. Plus the kids always tried to take my shoes and smell them or hide them from me, so that was that. They stayed on. |

It never seemed optional to me. I didn't mind the slippers so much once I got used to standing for long periods on them. And on really cold days. |

Do any of the teachers at your school wear slippers instead of their actual shoes? I've worked at two different schools as an after school teacher, and no one ever provided me with slippers, nor did any of the teachers wear slippers around.
I usually wouldn't say this, because I think comfort should take precedent over fake status images, but it goes a long way if you dress nice here. And, you can spot a hagwon teacher from a mile away. When I worked my previous AS job in Gangnam, I would feel bad seeing a 250 lbs white girl wearing some old ass flowery dress and flip flops. Stands out like a sore thumb in that part of town especially.
Pack your dress shoes, slacks, and long sleeved button down shirts... then bust out of that hagwon after month #1 and get a nice four hour a day AS job. |
