Hi! Just curious if anyone here listen to J-Pop.
I don't understand Japanese (though I'm learning), but I find myself attach to that genre of music more frequently than others.
I noticed there's quite a number of members from Japan here. Does anyone know the group Morning Musume?
Which other J-Pop artist/group do you listen to if you do listen to J-Pop? |

I listen to it sometimes. Morning Musume is cute and genki, but it's kind of paedo pervish for anyone over legal adult age to admit to listening to them too much (at least for a guy).  
I prefer rock music (classic rock, grunge rock, etc.), so my musical tastes are more toward Keisuke Kuwata (桑田 佳祐) and the Southern All Stars or Mongol 800.
One of the biggest bands out there is SMAP which has an enduring sound (and a number of prime time TV shows).
For female performers, you must know about Ayu. Though personally I like BoA (who is not actually Japanese but does a lot of J-Pop songs) for her incredible vocal range. And when you're feeling weird, you can't help but smile listening to that classic girls' punk band Shonen Knife.  |

I think you mean the majority of their fanbase, huh?  Hey, there's nothing wrong with guys liking "cute" things... at least in East Asian culture... just not in an obsessive, twisted, kind of way

Interesting, I actually know about BoA but not Ayu. One of the first J-Pop songs that I was exposed to were sang by BoA, but it took me a while to realize that she's Korean. Hm, I'll check out some of the other stuff you've mentioned... |

Let's just say that, as the father of a little girl myself, I find the idea of a bunch of 14 or 15-year old girls singing "Love Machine" very disturbing.   
I gotta go out and buy a gun before she gets to that age.

Oh yeah, Ayumi Hamasaki is a huge mega diva. She has a very distinctive voice and style. A lot of us outsiders' first exposure to J-pop is through anime theme songs, and BoA is definitely the go-to-girl for a lot of that. But for what's hip, you have to follow the career of Ayu who is much more a self-made star with an independent musical bent (other J-pop stars are much more controlled by their agents and record companies). |

Oh! Ayu = Ayumi... Sorry didn't make that connection (your previous link didn't work because Youtube's blocked at work... ). Yep, I know about her... her CD was one of the first in my JPop collection (if you consider a few CDs as a "collection").

I guess it depends on the context... I understand from a father's perspective like yours (although the time has yet to come for me) that it may be disturbing. But to me, I view it as much more innocuous when compared to radio "hits" like My Humps and Toxic (or some of Britney's songs for that matter) that the kids are exposed to. The tone and the melody of Love Machine was not meant to be seductive nor was the PV (oh wait, you have the link...), at least when compared to what we hear on the radio in the US nowadays.

Quite frankly, I don't really see anything disturbing in the lyrics... maybe playfully "sexy" at best. Nothing seductive or suggesting. And in the context of a 14 yr. old it would be more like a first crush than anything else. Love has many different levels. |

I've never heard that Morning Musume song but going by those lyrics it sounds pretty tame compared to..... well pretty much ALL Top 40 western songs....  And again, I'm not really on sure footing here, but I always assumed the singers were in their late teens/early twenties?
Regarding other J-Pop, I've a soft spot for the guitar and vocals of YUI whom I came across via a simple, romantic movie: Taiyou no Uta. (Song of/to/for?? the Sun)
