What do you think are the main qualities in Mishimas novels?
Should the above sentence be rewritten to:
What do you think the main qualities in Mishima's novels are? _________________ Hiromichi |

redset, Thank you.
So (a) and (b) are both right.
(a) What do you think you are?
(b) What do you think are you?
How about the below?
(c) Where do you think he went?
(d) Where do you think did he go?
(d) is unacceptable,isn't it? _________________ Hiromichi |

Anuradha Chepur, Thank you. If so, why is a sentence below(=(b)) acceptable?(according to redset)
What do you think are the main qualities in Mishimas novels?
It should be:

They are acceptable to me too.
I'm unable to tell you why What do you think are you? is unacceptable. Let's wait and see if it's acceptable to someone else. |

Anuradha Chepur, My analysis is as follows:
(Case !)
1.1 What do you think are the main qualities in Mishimas novels?
1.2What do you think the main qualities in Mishima's novels are?
In this case "what" or "the main qualities in Mishima's novels" could be a subject. 1.1:what, 1.2:the main qualities in Mishima's novels
(Case 2)
What do you think you are?
In this case only "you" could be a subject;"what" could not be a subject.
Is the above theory of mine right? _________________ Hiromichi |

Sorry Hiromichi, I missed your update on the post.
The underlying sentences for these questions are:
1.1 What do you think are the main qualities in Mishimas novels?
You think (a,b,c) are the main qualities in Mishima's novels.
1.2 What do you think the main qualities in Mishima's novels are?
You think the main qualities in Mishima's novels are (a,b,c)
(The underlying sentences for both 1.1 and 1.2 are well-formed.)
2.1 What do you think you are?
You think you are (great).
2.2 What do you think are you?
*You think (great) are you.
(The underlying sentence for 2.2 is ill-formed, and that's what makes 2.2 bad.) |
