Just about to send my CV off everywhere but was curious if i should remove my earings and shave my (tidy) beard? Would i be more hirable if i did so?
How often do you see esl teachers with earings and facial hair?
Thanks |

I have both and haven't had any problem but the beard was neatly trimmed (short) and the simple gold studs are hardly visible on the photo. I
t took a month before anyone noticed them in person.
I would guess that about 20% have one, the other or both.

100 percent shave and remove. Schools want the corporate catalogue male look, not the tree-hugging liberal environmentalist look. Standardise yourself and play the game. |

This. Koreans are absolutely *obsessed* with first impressions. at the moment there are a lot of applicants for even the crappy ESL jobs in the ROK. Go as conservative and by the book as you can at the start....once you've made an appearance and proven yourself somewhat you can get away with a lot....head shaven, tattoos, piercings etc...to start with, though....not so much. |

Had them already bookmarked. This kind of question comes up once in a while. |

My last school, 10/12 teachers had beards. 4/12 had piercings. 11 guys, 1 gal.
Not really a problem, but you might not get as many interviews as you want. |

Show your school the image of the Korean on the 10,000 KRW note. They did have beards and it was a symbol of respect back then. Mind you things go round. |

It depends on how badly you need the job. But there are Koreans who will not even consider you for their school. Just keep that in mind. |

If you have no soul and the corporate tool look works for you, then that's great. But you shouldn't think what works for you is what everybody else should do. Frankly, there are a lot of guys out there who look funny without a beard. Their faces are otherwise too doughy and vacant to pull off the corporate shill look. Fortunately for the OP, "the game" in Korea isn't the same as the game in conservative America. The notion that you'll get fewer job offers because you have facial hair sound pretty bunk to me. You'll probably get more compliments if anything.
So to hell with standardizing yourself. Whatever makes you feel comfortable is how you should appear in your picture. That would be better than changing your appearance mid-contract, and it would ensure that you get hired by an employer who accepts how you look. |

Don't listen to these people. Just shave for the first impression. There is a chance they won't hire you because of a beard but there is no chance that they wont hire you because you are clean shaven.
Once you are hear do what you want.
That being said I have seen hogwon workers who have tattoos above their shoulders, huge gages in their ears, and crazy 6 inch long beards. YOu can find a job no matter what you look like. |

I doubt that would work very well. If you're hired without a beard, chances are your employer won't want you to grow one. That was the case for one of my friends, anyway. Best to look how you plan on looking so there are no surprises. |

I've had a trimmed beard for most of my life but I shaved it for my first job here. That was actually before prospective employers started asking for photos (yes, that used to be normal) but I wanted to make a good first impression. It didnt hurt.
Grew it back my first vacation & I've kept it since, without issue. A simple earring is also a non-issue. |
